He moved to Erie with his parents and siblings and later graduated from the former Wesleyville High School in 1943. He began working at Weil-McLaine Inc., while in high school and retired in 1981 after 39 years. He also worked for the Peek 'n Peak Resort and Conference Center in Clymer NY.
He enjoyed drawing and art.
He married Virginia "Vernie" Stiles Septemeber 29, 1945. To this union seven sons were born, five of whom are still living. His two oldest sons died while infants, Hugh Arthur McGrath II and Patrick Hugh McGrath.
Three of his siblings followed him in death, two brothers, John Edward McGrath and Paul James McGrath, and one sister, Frances Lucille McGrath. He has one sister who is still living.
Arrangements for his funeral were handled by the Bracken Funeral Home of Corry PA.
