1st Lieutenant Henry Jerome Spalding was an observer (bombardier) in the 96th Aero Squadron during WWI. This Squadron was the first in the United States Air Service to have bombardment as its sole mission. The Squadron flew Breguet 14 bombers and was based at the Amanty Airdrome in France. Spalding was assigned to the 96th on November 2, 1918. On November 4th, 1918, Lieutenant Spalding flew in the last bombing raid of the War by the 96th Aero Squadron. On their way back to the Airdrome, Lieutenant Spalding's formation encountered fifteen very aggressive enemy aircraft and two were claimed to have been shot down by the Breguets. Spalding remained with the Squadron through the Armistice.

Lieutenant Spalding died January 23, 1921, as the result of an airplane crash near Elkton Maryland.
