Ruth was the daughter of William T. Goolsby and Rebecca Ann "Annie" Johnson Goolsby. On January 9, 1926, Ruth married Charles Willard Thacker, and they were the parents of Joan Hope Potter, Mildred June Lucas, Margaret Jean Jeffers Harbrecht, Nancy Lee Thacker, and Willa Sue Hunnicutt.
