Vernon E. "Sparky" Brooks, 86, of The Caring Place in Franklin, formerly of Kennerdell and a veteran of World War II, passed away Sunday, Aug. 15, 2010, at The Caring Place, following a short illness. Born Sept. 5, 1923, in Hendersonville, he was the son of William P. Brooks and Ida Jamison Brooks.

Mr. Brooks received his education at Polk Public School. He was married Feb. 17, 1962, in Winchester, Va., to the former Nancy Harper, and she survives.

He worked at the Talon Co. in Meadville prior to going into the U.S. Army. Mr. Brooks served in the South Pacific during World War II, and upon his return from the service, he worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad. He also received his pilot license through the GI Bill and flew the U.S. mail and also enjoyed being a private pilot.

He worked in the laundry department and also in security for Polk State School. He also was employed by Joy Manufacturing as a stock keeper and also worked for Fuller Brush Co., selling household items door to door.

Mr. Brooks started working for Penelec in 1951 as an apprentice, working his way up to electrical troubleshooter and serviceman. He retired from Penelec in 1988. He then became an electrical inspector for Atlantic Inland Co. from 1988 to 2000 and worked for Guardian as an electrical inspector from 2000 until 2002, when his health didn't permit him to work any longer.

He enjoyed collecting coins and loved his German shorthaired dogs, especially hunting with his dog Bingo. He also enjoyed hunting deer and squirrel and fishing trips to Canada with friends. And, he loved his cats Oscar, Hermie and Tabitha.

Surviving in addition to his wife are six children, Patti Brown Baldwin of Pittsburgh, William Brooks and his wife, Dawn, of Johnstown, Greg Brooks and wife, Linda, of Oil City, Valerie Peterson and her husband, Robert "Punk," of Franklin, David Brooks and wife, Darla, of Franklin and Dr. Allison Granados and her husband, Daniel, of Farmington Hills Mich.; and a stepdaughter, Linda Layton and her husband, Jon, of Columbus, Ohio.

Also surviving are his grandchildren, Jordan Osadczisk of Johnstown; Matthew Brown and his wife, Dawn, of Fort Bragg, N.C.; Colin Brooks and Jennifer Brooks, both of Oil City; Scott Peterson and his wife, Sarah, Jeremy Peterson and his fiancé, Heather Cypher, Chris Peterson, Ben Peterson, David Brooks Jr. and Kaitlyn Brooks, all of Franklin; Carolina Granados of Farmington Hills, Mich.; Brian Marsh of Alabama; Tara Brown and her husband, Phil, of Indianapolis; Krista Harringer and her husband, Andrew, of Philadelphia; Kelly Lucas and her husband, Herb, of Cochranton; Travis McGuire of Alabama; and Will Brown of Altoona.

He also is survived by his great-grandchildren, Jillian Knickerbocker, Ariel, Eva Austin Brown, Brayden and Brooke Peterson, Laken, Audrina and Riley Peterson, Dylan Lucas, Luke Gearhart, Marissa Lombardo, Matthew Brown and Emily Poborsky. Also surviving are a sister, Margaret Davison of Chesapeake Va.; a special nephew, Gaylord Brooks and his wife, Dottie, of Polk; a sister in law, Betty Brooks of Franklin; and his best friends from Tampa, Richard and Brenda Brown. Many nieces and nephews also survive

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty McCracken Brooks, who passed away in July 1961; two brothers, Wayne and Gaylord Brooks; an infant brother; and a dear friend, Freda Brown.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Larry E. McKinley Funeral Home, 109 Emlenton St. Clintonville. Friends also will be received from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. Thursday in The Caring Place, 103 N. 13th St., Franklin. Pastor Linda Deeter of The Caring Place will officiate. Interment will be in Union Home Cemetery, Mercer County.
