William Carrington enlisted in Company E, 51st New York Infantry Regiment (the "Shepard Rifles") on August 19, 1861. He fought in the battle of Roanoke Island, and was mortally wounded in action during the battle of New Berne on March 14, 1862. He died of his wounds in a New York hospital on 9 May, 1862.

NOTE: the marker reads "Mortally Wounded March 4" however the regiment did not arrive at New Berne until March 11, 1862; the battle there was fought on March 14, which is the correct date of Carrington's wounding. This information is corroborated by the regimental roster compiled by the Adjutant General in 1900.
