Cecelia Whielan Embry; Ph.D., a member of a pioneer Corpus Christi family, was the daughter of Peter James and Katherine Kelly Whelan (later Mrs. Katherine Quinn), who were also born in Corpus Christi. She was a descendant of Peter Dunn and James McBride on her father's side, and of Martin Kelly and William Cody on her mother's side, all of whom came to Corpus Christi from Ireland in the 1840s and 1850s. The ranches that the Kellys started in Corpus Christi and in Comstock, Texas, are still in the family.

Dr. Embry was a graduate of Incarnate Word Academy in 1942, a school previously attended by her mother and grandmother. She earned a Bachelor's Degree with honors from the University of Texas at Austin, and Master's and Ph.D. degrees from the same university. She taught for 25 years at Del Mar College, retiring in 1991 as a full professor. She served for many years on the Advisory Board of the Incarnate Word Academy Alumni and helped edit the alumni magazine. She was a member of the American Association of University Professors, the American Association of University Women, and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas; she was also an Associate of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrement Order and a member of St. Patrick's parish.
