The 15th remained in the defenses of Washington until April, 1864. They were re-designated as an infantry regiment and participated in Grant's Overland Campaign. They saw action at Battle of the Wilderness, Spottsylvania (after which Braunstein was promoted to captain), Harris Farm, North Anna River, Jericho Mills, Totopotomy, and Cold Harbor.
Captain Braunstein was mortally wounded on May 31, 1864, at the battle of Totopotomoy Creek. He was sent to the Lincoln Hospital in Washington DC, where he died on June 10, 1864.
NOTE: Braunstein's enlistment records state he was born "about 1823." The inscription on his original stone is in German.
