Robert L. Speed, 88, of 911 East State Street, died in Tompkins County Hospital. Born in Dryden township August 17, 1873, he was a son of Robert G.H. and Romelia Van Pelt Speed.

He was president of the Cornell Class of 1897. He attended his 65th Cornell reunion this year.

He married Mary L. Bull in 1896. He lived his early life in Slaterville and worked for the Crystal Foundation Creamery. He later was employed with the State Dept. of Agriculture in New York City.

Mr. Speed was a member of the Caroline Lodge No. 681 F. & A.M., Slaterville Springs, the Masonic Club of Ithaca. He was a past master of the Caroline Grange.

He is survived by a son, John H. Speed of Slaterville Springs; a sister, Emma R. Speed of Ithaca; a brother, L.D. Speed of Lakeland, Florida; two nephews and a niece.

Funeral services will be held in the Wagner Funeral Home. The Rev. Warren Traub, rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church will officiate. Burial will be in Garrett Mandeville Dutch Cemetery, Slaterville Springs.
