The son of John & Eva (Stabler) Seitz, he married Marian A. Miller November 4, 1849, in Springfield Township, York County, Pennsylvania, fathering Melinda (b. 12/01/47), Sarah E. (b. 10/01/49), Sophia (b. 01/01/55 - married Franklin O. Goodling), Mary Celesta (b. 02/14/57), Catherine F. "Cassie" (b. 04/02/60), Anna Mary "Mellie" (b. 08/14/62), Ida (b. 04/21/64), John Edwin (b. 11/21/66), Seth G. (b. 01/02/69), and Irene M. (b. 06/08/74). In 1860 he was a farmer living in Springfield Township and stood 5' 8" tall with light hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in York County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service there November 4 as a private with Co. B, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), but transferred to Luther's Independent Milita Company and honorably discharged with his company July 23, 1863.

In 1890, he lived in Hametown, Shrewsbury Township, York County.
