'Sarah Jane Borden was born in Belleville, Ontario, Canada, May 19, 1857 and died at her home, four miles northwest of Douglass Kansas, July 13, 1927, being at that time, 70 years, 1 month, and 24 days of age.

'When a child five years of age, her parents moved to Peoria, Illinois, where she grew to womanhood. She then moved to Emerson, Iowa, where she was married to Andrew Douglas in 1877. She and her husband moved to Emerson, Nebraska, where he died December 8, 1887.

'On October 2, 1889 she was married to James W. Woods. They lived in Emerson, Nebraska several years, then moved in 1905, according to journal entry by John Lester Douglas to Belleville, Republic County Kansas, where they made their home until they came to Douglass Butler County, Kansas in 1909. After about a year spent here in town they moved out to the farm where the remainder of her life was spent.

'Her husband, James Woods, died January 20, 1917.

'Sister Woods was the mother of eight children, three by the first marriage and five by the last. Her first child, Albert Douglas, died in 1919. Those living are: Frank A. Douglas, Superior, Nebr.; John L. Douglas, Belleville, Kans.; Archie Woods, Amerillo, Texas; Mrs. Mary Hartenbower, Mrs. Eva Wakefield and Bryan Woods of Douglass, Kansas and Mrs. Gladys Preston of Wichita. Besides the children mentioned in this sketch she leaves to mourn her departure, four step-children--Mrs. Maud Isascs, P. J. and Ernest Woods and Mrs. Lucy Guthrie, all of Douglas, Kansas. She also leaves one sister, Mrs. Ida Young, of Almena, Kansas.

'Sister Woods was a church member all her life. She was first a member of the Episcopalian church, then the Presbyterian church and for about 25 years, the Methodist Episcopal church.' (provided by Mary Jo (Lane) Hawkinson )
