Hans Theodor Berg was born May 18, 1894, in the Climax, Minnesota, farm home of Hans and Severine Berg. He completed eight grades in Polk County District No. 6 Elementary School. On October 21, 1920, he married Olga Benora Thoreson.
Being the only son in his family, Hans had to assume considerable responsibility on the home farm at the age of 14 when his father died. He wanted to go on to school but was unable to and so remained in farming for the rest of his life. He disliked farming, preferring to do other work such as carpentry, especially cabinet work. He was a perfectionist (except in farming) and was known for his fine craftsmanship in carpentry, especially in finish and cabinet work. He also dreamed of operating a botanical nursery or a restaurant. Neither dream was ever carried out. He built several pieces of furniture and a few homes in the nearby towns.
Hans was an accomplished violinist and tenor singer. He directed the church choir and sang in a quartet for several years with Ingeman and Ole Thoreson and Olaf Strommen. Upon the death of Ole, Harry Evenson joined the quartet. He served in several other church positions such as trustee, deacon, Sunday School teacher, Luther League President, choir singer, etc. He was one of the organizers of the Sand Hill Luther League. All of this was in Sand Hill Lutheran Church. He also served as Polk County Tax Assessor in Vineland Township for several years. His wife, Olga, assisted him as bookkeeper and accountant.
In spite of the farm drudgery, Hans and Olga had a good outlook on life and had a good sense of humor. They often could laugh about past setbacks and hardships. They enjoyed playing organ and violin duets and singing together, preferring that to any other entertainment or pastime. Neither one liked reading although Hans studied the Bible in his early years. They enjoyed going for automobile drives when they could afford it and to go to town. Hans was quick to drop everything for the slightest excuse to go to town. Both Hans and Olga enjoyed their church work and were active in it most of their lives.
Hans died December 1, 1960. He was survived by his wife, two daughters, Myrtle (Frank) Brandon, and Evelyn (Charles) Mondich; three sons, Hans (Irene), Alvin (Glo), Lawrence (Phillis), and Russell (Dorrine) Berg, and 16 grandchildren; four sisters, Karine Thune, Hilda Stortroen, Emma Thompson and Hannah Bangen. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Karl, and two sisters, Sara Bangen and Laura Bangen.
Funeral services were held December 6, 1960, with interment in Sand Hill Lutheran Church Cemetery.
