Grandpa was tough as nails, and he had to be with his career as owner of a gold-mining operation in the '30s and '40s in Alaska. He was widowed and left with two young daughters (I believe his first wife's last name was Green). He later married the camp cook, Alice Lanky, and had 4 children with her. They later moved to San Diego (I believe in the early 60s). Grandpa died due to surgery complications. His stoic demeanor is still remembered by us all.
