SCOTT, Wesley 'Mike'
PLAINS - Funeral services for Wesley W. "Mike" Scott, 85, of Plains, were to be held Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 10 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Plains with the Rev. Constance Sidebottom officiating. Burial with military graveside rites by Horse Plains VFW Post #3596 was to follow in Plains Cemetery, where five generations of the Scott family are interred.
Mr. Scott died of natural causes Sunday, Oct. 16, 1994, at Community Medical Center in Missoula.
He was born Jan. 4, 1909, to Mary and Walter A. Scott at Plains. His birth was attended by one of the early doctors in the area, Dr. Hattery.
Mike attended school in the Plains public school system for 11 years, having spent his junior year at McIntosh, S.D. He was graduated from Plains High School in 1927, and spent the next two years attending Bethany College at Lindsborg, Kan., on an athletic scholarship, and working there several months for Standard Oil Company exploring the area for oil.
Vacations he spent working on his parents' ranch, as a logger and occasionally he was employed by the U.S. Forest Service. In 1932, he completed his college work earning a degree in journalism from the University of Montana. He spent the next five years farming, logging and doing seasonal Forest Service work. July 14, 1934, Mike and Elizabeth C. Williams, a local teacher, were married. In November 1938, they purchased The Plainsman and a home at Plains. Mike was the editor and publisher of the weekly newspaper for four years, while serving intermittenly on the town council and as chief of the Plains Volunteer Fire Department. In November 1942, he was called into military service, which took him to the western Pacific. He was honorably discharged from the Army in July 1946, and he and his wife resumed operations of teh Plains paper for a brief period. Later that year, he accepted a permanent commission in the Army and returned to active duty in Arizona, Germany, France, Washington state, Chile and finally at the U.S. Army Missile Command at Huntsville, Ala., completing 20 years of service. He retired in December 1962, and went to work for NASA in an adminstrative capacity, first at Hunstville and later at the Douglas Aircraft plant at Huntington, Beach, Calif. He was involved with the production of one of hte booster stages of the Saturn V (Apollo moon shot).
In April 1971, he retired a second time and the couple returned to Plains residing on Boyer Creek a few hundred yards from Mike's birthplace on property that had been owned by Mike's parents.
There they spend considerable time improving the grounds and dwelling and purchased his boyhood home, which was moved a short distance and renovated for a rental unitl.
Mike was an active member of the Horse Plains VFW Post, having been a member since 1946. When the post's original building was destroyed by fire in March 1977, Mike became post commander and was instrumental in the construction of the organization's present home.
Mr. Scott was the recipient of the 1994 Wipplinger Memorial Community Service Award at Plains.
He was preceded in death by his wife in March 1987.
Sept. 8, 1990, Mike and Iris Jean Kolberg of Buffalo, N.Y. were married. She survives him at the family home.
Other survivors include a son, Michael D. Scott, Havre; two granddaughters; two stepchildren and their families; and several great-greatchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.
