John Archibald Foster was born on April 17, 1918 in Milwaukee, WI to Harry Llewellyn and Ruth Archibald Foster and died May 31, 2006 in Paradise, CA at the age of 88.
John graduated from the University of Washington in 1940 with B.A. in Economics and Business. He often joked that he chose the Univ. of Washington because it had a golf course right on campus. After graduation he worked for Boeing Aircraft Co., in Seattle until the USA entered the Second World War. As a Captain, John served in the European Theatre. He was a B-24 pilot in the 725th Squadron of the 451st Bomb Group in Italy. His plane was shot down over Yugoslavia. John and his crew bailed out behind enemy lines and, aided by Partisan soldiers and friendly Yugoslav civilians, walked to safety.
After the war, John realized he liked working with people more than numbers and went into sales. Over the next 40 years he worked for Wilson & Geo. Meyer & Company, National Filter Media Corp. and Collier Carbon & Chemical Corp., a subsidiary of Union Oil Co.
John enjoyed travel, bridge, and fishing, but was avid about golf and reading. After he retired, he and his wife, Hildreth, moved from Orange County to Fallbrook, CA to live at Palo Mesa Golf Resort. John was active with his church and volunteered with the Fallbrook Community Project which provides food and other resources for the needy, and the Rolling Readers, a program tutoring children in reading. John moved to Paradise in 2002 after his wife died. While at Feather Canyon Retirement Residence, John enjoyed reading current events to his fellow residents and playing bridge.
His wife of 54 years, Hildreth Marie Montgomery Foster, and his only sister, Barbara Ann Adams, preceded John in death. John is survived by his son and daughter in law, Jerry W. and Harriett Foster of Paradise, CA; two daughters, Carol J. Foster of Banks, OR and Janice R. Foster of Orange, CA; two cousins, Pat Fitch of Laguna Niguel, CA and Mary Jean Healy of Manhattan Beach, CA; and several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were handled by the Neptune Society of Northern California and there will be no service.
