Pneumonia Is Fatal To Local School Teacher
Miss Katharine Fay Is Victim--
Nephew Stricken With Malady
Pneumonia caused the death of Miss Katharine Fay, aged 53, a teacher in the Smethport schools Sunday afternoon. Yesterday morning her young nephew, John Fay, who resided with her, was taken to the Clean General Hospital suffering from the same dread malady.
Miss Fay was stricken with a severe cold a week prior to her death. Pneumonia developed last Friday—her 53rd birthday. An oxygen tent and all other modern devices failed to save her life. Death occurred in her apartment Sunday afternoon.
Residents of Smethport and vicinity were saddened by news of the passing of the well known and esteemed seventh grade teacher, who had been employed by the local school district for 15 years.
Miss Fay was born in Gifford Hollow, near East Smethport, on January 15, 1884, a daughter of the late Michael and Anna Fay.
Miss Fay engaged in a successful career of teaching which covered a period of over 30 years. She taught at East Smethport and Burbank, in Keating township, before accepting a position in the borough schools.
Miss Fay's life, both privately and professionally, was above reproach. She was charitable and friendly, possessing a fine mind and a keen wit.
She exemplified the finest professional ethics in her teaching career and was highly respected by her pupils, both for her ability and personality.
Deceased was an active, devout member of St. Elizabeth's Church and the Catholic Daughters of America.
Miss Fay is survived by one sister, Mrs. Frank Hooley of Allegany, NY, and a brother Urben Fay, of Smethport. A number of nieces and nephews survive.
Burial in St. Elizabeth's cemetery.
