US Congressman. Member of Missouri State House of Representatives; U.S. Representative from Missouri 3rd District 1873-1877. Gustavus was born near Cologne, Germany, and immigrated to the United States in 1848 with his parents. They settled in St. Charles, Missouri, where he attended St. Charles College. He graduated from the Cincinnati Ohio Law School in 1859 and was admitted to the bar in 1860. He practiced law in St. Louis until becoming a member of the Union Army during the Civil War. He was a member of the Missouri State House of Representatives from 1864 until 1868 and served as speaker pro tempore in 1868. He was elected as a Republican to the 41st Congress and as a Liberal Republican to the 42nd Congress. He was later appointed United States judge for the eastern district of Missouri in 1905 and served until 1907, when he resigned. He served as the President of the Bar Association of Metropolitan St Louis for the years 1886 and 1887.
