He was born July 11, 1923, in Louann, Arkansas. Mr. Custer and his family moved to the East Texas area in the early 1930s. He served our country in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. Mr. Custer worked for the Gulf Oil Corp. from 1946 until his retirement in 1986. In his retirement, Mr. Custer enjoyed working in his garden and spending time outdoors. He was a wonderful father, devoted husband and loved his grandchildren.
Mr. Custer is survived by his wife of 65 years, Vernelle Custer of Kilgore; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tommie and Karen Custer of Kilgore and Don and Patsy Custer of White Oak; two brothers, George Custer of Atlanta, Georgia, and Arthur Custer of Kilgore; four grandchildren, Shannon Custer of Diana, Jeffery Custer of Lone Star, Stephen Custer of Lone Oak and Michael Custer of Heath; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Thomas Ray Custer Jr.; a sister, Margaret Ray; and one brother, James Custer.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. today, August 22, 2010, at Rader Funeral Home.
