JAMES HELMICK, 76, DIES

Oregon Native Son Served Polk County as Commissioner

MONMOUTH (Special)―James Helmick, 76, died at his home here last night after several months' illness. Mr. Helmick was the son of a pioneer family and was born on the donation land claim of his father, Henry Helmick, four miles south of Monmouth, on the Luckiamute river. A part of the old homestead was made into a park and given to the state a few years ago by his mother, Sarah Helmick. Mr. Helmick took an active part in the political activities of Polk county and served as county commissioner for two terms. He is survived by the widow, Amanda Helmick, four daughters and six grandchildren. The daughters are Mrs. A. Weist of Klamath Falls, Mrs. Frances Hill, Mrs. Clay Bush and Mrs. Charles Smith, all of Monmouth. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon from the Smith chapel at Monmouth, with interment in the Knights of Pythias cemetery, Rev. Mr. Williard of the Christian church officiating.
