U.S. Congressman. He immigrated to the United States in 1817, became a licensed Methodist Minister in 1826 and preached in the Illinois. He served as president of the Illinois Board of Public Works, (1834-37), was a member of the Illinois State House of Representatives in 1836 and register of the land office at Dixon, Illinois, (1841-45). Moving to St. Louis, Missouri, he engaged in the wholesale grocery business, was postmaster of St. Louis, (1857-61) and elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-ninth Congress, serving (1865-67). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed his wholesale grocery business until his death.
