United State Senator, Cleveland Mayor. Thomas Burke was elected mayor of Cleveland, Ohio in 1945, serving for four terms until 1953. As a Democrat, he served in the United States Senate from November 10, 1953, until December 2, 1954. During his administration as mayor, he presided over a large capital-improvement program, including Burke Lakefront Airport. During World War I, Burke served in the United States Army. In 1920, he graduated from the College of the Holy Cross before graduating from Western Reserve University School of Law in 1923. He entered politics in Cleveland in 1930 as assistant county prosecutor and by 1941 was vice-mayor before being elected to mayor. After the death of Ohio US Senator Robert Taft, he was appointed by the governor to fill the vacancy on October 12, 1953. In a special election, which followed, he was defeated by a narrow margin with a recount. At that point, he retired from politics but continued practicing law as senior partner in the law firm Burke, Haber & Berwick. Burke married twice and had two daughters with his first wife before her death.
