Governor of Minnesota from 1899 to 1901. John Lind emigrated from Sweden to the United States. He served in the Spanish American War in 1898, then settled in Minnesota to practice law. He joined the Republican party, and while he could not yet vote in the 1872 presidential election, he stood at the polls to hand out ballots. This led to a receivership in the United States Land Office in 1881, and in 1886 a Republican nomination to Congress. He had the advantages that his district was strongly Republican, and the Swedish and German vote was dependably in his favor. He served in the United States House of Representatives from March 1887 to March 1893 and served as a member of the House Commerce Committee. He announced his retirement at the end of the Fifty-Second Congress. In 1897 he ran for governor as a Democrat, lost that election, but ran again in 1898 and won. He served as the 14th Governor of Minnesota from January 1899, to January 1901. He also served in the United States House of Representatives from March 1903, to March 1905, as a Democrat. In 1913, he was the U.S. President’s envoy to Mexico.
