John Alexander Utley was born Feb 1838 in PA, the son of Samuel Utley and Elizabeth Diehl/Doyle.

John married Catherine Weigle in Hockersville, Cumberland, Pennsylvania in 17 Jan 1861.

In 1863, He was in Penn Township, Cumberland County, PA and stood 5'-8" tall and had dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Centerville, Cumberland County, August 25, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 3 as a private with Co. F, 207th Pennsylvania Infantry, and was honorably discharged with his company May 31, 1865.

John and Catherine came to Indiana in 1869 (a descendent of Mary Jane Utley says Mary Jane was 3 when the Utleys moved to IN)

They were the parents of:

2.Samuel Martin Utley 1864 – 1928, h/o Mary Katherine Yost
