Nancy E. Gobble, daughter of Elijah Gobble and wife Lucinda (Mazingo) Gobble, married Hiram F. Hudson about 1856 in Washington County Virginia. They became parents of two children, Marilda Jane Hudson and Emory Ballard Hudson.

Nancy's husband Hiram Hudson died age 25 in June 1861 as the Civil War was heating up. Altho that area of Virginia was a hotbed of the war, Hiram's death certificate shows he died of a "fever", and the family history says he had pneumonia that became tuberculosis.

Nancy was a 21-year-old widow with two children to raise on their hardscrabble farm in "poor valley" Virginia. She was a practical nurse and was called whenever anyone was sick, and if it went from bad to worse, Nancy helped "lay them out" after death, as the saying goes, for there were no undertakers at that time in the mountains.

In the 1880 census Nancy Hudson is living with her daughter Marilda and husband Jim Knott in Washington County, Virginia. Jim Knott died suddenly at age 39, leaving Marilda a widow with six children. The two young widows, mother and daughter, Miz Nancy and Marilda leave Virginia with the children and move to SC to work in a cotton factory.

1890 Nancy is with Marilda and family in Enoree SC
1900 census Miz Nancy has moved in with her granddaughter Dell and husband Ben Wilson at Fort Laramie.
1902 Nancy dies. Some say she died at her daughters house in Wyncote, others say her grandson Hut Knott's home at Fort Laramie, others say at her granddaughter Dell's house.
