His mother was Viola G. Patterson from her second marriage to Alfred Wesley Patterson, a widower with 10 children. She had a son name Bevion Brooks "Brooks" Saneford from her first marriage. Her maiden name was Cannon. Viola and Alfred Patterson had a daughter name Edith Joy "Joy" Patterson, who was born in 1932. Viola died of influenza in 1935. Many years later, when Brooks and Joy set a stone for their mother, they chose to leave off the Patterson surname and just used her first name.

Uncle Brooks added an E to his surname. The story I've heard is that it was due to a typographical error when he joined the navy during the World War II, and he never bothered to change it.
