William Willard was born at Wethersfield, Connecticut, December 5, 1818, son of William Willard. He married September 22, 1840, Jane, daughter of John and Hannah (Wells) Griswold. She was born Dec. 5, 1818 and died Sept. 18, 1885.
He was warden of the Rhode Island State Prison in 1853 and was called from that to the head of the Connecticut prison at Wethersfield, and was remarkably successful; a thorough Christian gentleman. But he was brutally attacked by a life prisoner, and died August 14, 1870.
They had five children: Adaline Maria (married to Frank Walker Bacon), William Leslie (1845-1847), Alice Griswold, William Leslie (born 1852), and Emma Jane (married to Fred Walton Warner).
