Donald Frank (Dick) Scharnhorst, 87, of Genesee, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, at Tri-State Hospital in Clarkston, of heart failure. He earned the love, respect and admiration of three generations of Genesee-area residents during his 87 years in the region.
Dick was born Aug. 3, 1922, in a farmhouse south of Genesee. He attended Leon Country Grade School, a one-room schoolhouse, then graduated from Genesee High School, where he played football, basketball and baseball. He was later an outstanding catcher, pitcher and power hitter on a local baseball team comprised of high school standouts and ex-college talent.
Dick served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946. As sergeant, he commanded the color guard and propeller crews. He was an expert sharpshooter and won numerous medals for marksmanship. He was successful in the Army as an intersquad boxer, where he had 17 wins (eight by knockout) and one draw.
Dick married Marie Hampton on Nov. 15, 1947, in Genesee, where they resided together until her death in 1996. Dick and Marie raised three sons, several dogs and one horse during their 49 years together. They owned and operated Scharnhorst Petroleum, an oil and gasoline distributorship in Genesee from 1947 to 1978. Marie was the media generalist for the Potlatch School District for 17 of those years. Dick sold his business to son Bruce in 1978, and then began his second career, operating the family farm from 1978 to 1990. Dick was quite proud of his wheat crop yields, especially the 150 bushels per acre on 36 of his acres one year!
Dick was very active in the Genesee community, where he served on the city council for two years and as mayor of Genesee for 13 years. He was Genesee High School Booster of the Year, member of the American Legion Post 58, Knights of Columbus, St. Mary's Parish, volunteer fire department and was grand marshal of the Community Days Parade three times. He was a charter member of the Lewiston Elks Club.
Dick was an avid and well-respected sportsman. He loved to hunt birds, deer and elk. He shot his last deer at the age of 85. He spent many hours fishing for steelhead on the Snake and Clearwater rivers, fly-fishing in countless area streams and trolling for kokanee at Dworshak, Pend Oreille and Coeur d'Alene lakes. He also enjoyed trap-shooting, waterskiing and golfing at various stages of his life. Dick was one of the most loyal fans of local sporting events, and enjoyed watching Little League baseball as well as high school football, baseball and basketball. He especially enjoyed watching his sons' and grandsons' high school games, but continued to participate as a spectator and strong financial supporter of GHS athletics until his death. In his recent years, Dick loved to watch sporting events on television, and very seldom missed a Seattle Mariners or Gonzaga basketball game.
Dick is survived by his brother, Bob of Sedona, Ariz.; sisters Betty Fuller of Clarkston, Teresa Delore and Lorena Carnagey of Nampa; sons Bob and wife Louise of Kimberly, Idaho, Jim and wife Linda of Hayden Lake, Idaho, and Bruce and wife Holly of Genesee; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Mary; wife Marie; brother John; and sister Anita.
Dick's life will be celebrated with a rosary service at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Genesee, followed by a Mass at 10:30. A graveside military salute will be conducted by the American Legion shortly following Mass.
Memorials are suggested to the Genesee Fire Department and/or Genesee Ambulance Service.
