James is the son of Hugh Sr. and Janet (Agnew) Scott. He married Rebecca Patterson in 1790. They had 6 children: Hugh, Margaret, James, John, William, and Jane.

James Scott was a Captain in the Revolutionary War. He was also a physician. He built the hotel known as the "McClelland House" south of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
