Abel was from a traveling family, pioneers heading West. They left from Pennsylvania, spending years in Wisconsin and then Illinois, where Abel and his younger sister Emma were born. The family moved on to Iowa, and finally settled in Clay County, Kansas about 1874. As his siblings married and moved from home Abel stayed, caring for his parents and the farm until both passed away.
At age 40, soon after the death of his father, Abel married Lottie Kidd, the best friend of his young niece Nellie. The Kidd family had moved back to Illinois from Kansas, Nellie and Lottie had kept in touch writing letters, and eventually Lottie and Abel were writing letters also. They decided to marry, February 24, 1908 at Ottawa, Illinois with the consent of Lottie's mother, Susan Kidd. Abel and Lottie Anthony returned to Clay County,Kansas to make their home and raise three children, Albert, Nellie (named for Lottie's best friend) and Bessie.
In February,1929, after selling the farm, the family moved to a 40 acre farm at Wiggins, Mississippi. About 1948 Abel and Lottie moved to Tampa, Florida. Abel died at age 85 of congestive heart failure, after a fall at home that fractured his hip.
