Josseph F. Achatz
China Twp. Joseph F. Achatz, 83, of China Township, entered into Eternal Life on Thursday, July 22, 2004.
He was born in Fair Haven on June 27, 1921, a son to the late Frederick and Ida (Flotow) Achatz.
He married Mary M. Babel on Jan. 29, 1944 in Holy Cross Catholic Church, Marine City and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this past January.
Joseph served as a 3rd Class Petty Officer in the U. S. Navy during WWII and he took great pride in that fact.
Mr. Achatz was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church throughout most of his life. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus Council 856 and enjoyed setting up for bingo, weddings and other events.
As well as being a farmer throughout his life, Joe also worked at the St. Clair Rubber Co. as a millwright and retired following 35 years of service. Over the years, Joe often wrote to State Representatives, Senators, and other Legislators on all issues of concern from health to housing. He loved fixing things and working in the garage on many projects. Joe also enjoyed working in his garden and always shared the garden harvest with friends and family. He took pleasure in cooking and going out to eat with family.
Joseph had many hunting and fishing trips with friends and loved telling the stories of their adventures.
Joseph is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary; five children and spouses, Carrie (Darrell) Mayo of China, Calvin (Wynne) Achatz of China, Gayle (Mark) Walker of Fort Gratiot, Joe (Brenda) Achatz of Marine City and Fred (Kathy) Achatz of East China. He is the grandfather of Jacob, Jayme (Gordon), Mark, Emily, Jim, Joe Allen, Katelyn and John. He was uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. He is survived by his sister, Rita Babel of Marine City; and several in-laws. He is also survived by his best, Herb MacIntoch of Port Huron. Joseph and Herb were like brothers.
Joseph was preceded in death by his grandchildren, Dawn Achatz and Wyatt Walker.
Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday in Hold Cross Catholic Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery with military honors by the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council.
Visiting in the Bower-Rose Funeral Home, Marine City is 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday and in the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass at 10:30 a.m. There will be a Rosary service in the funeral home at 7 p.m. Sunday.
