He was born on his father's farm in Delaware Township, Sanilac County, Michigan, on April 28th, 1869. Moved with his parents to the village of Lexington in the year of 1882, where he was educated in the Lexington high school, and served apprentice time at the carpenter trade. Returned to Delaware Township in 1887 and engaged in threshing. Was married to Eliza English on Jan. 1st, 1889, and settled on a farm, where he remained five years, during which time their only child, a daughter, named Millie, was born to them, on Nov. 29, 1889. Moved with his family to Black River, Alcona County, Mich., in the fall of 1894, where he was employed by Alger, Smith & Co. as engineer in their saw mill, remaining with them five years, when he moved his family to Presque Isle County, and ran a lumber camp until the spring of 1901, when he came to Huron County, Mich., and again engaged in threshing, which he still follows. Bought and settled on his present farm in the spring of 1902.
