Barak Norton came to Whiteside Cove, NC near Whiteside Mountain and built a cabin in 1827. The community where he made his home went on to become the "Norton" community. Each year all descendants of Barak Norton are invited to a family reunion held at the Whiteside Cove Community Building in Cashiers, NC. The reunion is always held on the forth Sunday of July! The 150th Barak Norton Family reunion will be held at the Whiteside Cove Community Building in Cashiers, NC on Sunday July 24, 2022 at 11:30am. Barak Norton was the first settler to stake his claim in what is now Cashiers in the early 1800s. The family will gather beneath the bluff of Whiteside Mountain to hear a few words of purpose and remembrance, to sing ageless hymns, bless the ties that bind and enjoy food and fellowship. The Church/Community Center is six miles east of Highlands, NC via Horse Cove Rd or seven miles south of Cashiers via Whiteside Cove Rd. Address is: 4601 Whiteside Cove Rd. Cashiers, NC.
