Michael L. Pheiffer was born November 19, 1947 in Galesburg, IL, the son of Raymond and Loretta Nelson Pheiffer. He lived in rural Rio, IL for six years then his family moved to rural Oneida, IL. Michael graduated from ROVA High School in Oneida, IL in 1965 where he participated in sports and was a member of FFA. He was awarded the FFA Illinois State Farmer degree. Michael was a member and past president of the Oneida Livestock 4-H Club and was a member of the Ontario Congregational Church in rural Oneida, IL. He played baseball for the Oneida Little League, ROVA Babe Ruth, ROVA High School and Galva American Legion teams. After high school he attended Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL.

Michael entered the U.S. Army in September 1967 and completed basic training at Fort Bliss, TX and advanced training at Fort Polk, LA. He served as an infantryman in Vietnam with D Company, 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. Michael was killed in action on April 17, 1968 in Binh Duong Province. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medal. Serving as pallbearers at his funeral were former schoolmates who were themselves serving in the military at the time and included Spec. 4 John Tingleaf, Sgt. Otha Swanson, Lance Cpl. Benjamin Clay, Spec. 4 John Selman, Cpl. David Girdler and Spec. 4 Steve Blender. Michael is the only graduate of ROVA High School to be killed in action during the Vietnam War. His name is on Panel 50E Row 33 on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C.

At the time of his death Michael was survived by his parents, two brothers, Gary and Matthew, and two sisters, Chris and Melinda, all at home. Also surviving were his maternal grandparents Earle and Beulah Nelson of New Windsor, IL, his paternal grandfather William Pheiffer of Monmouth, IL and his maternal great-grandmother Rachel Thomas of New Windsor, IL. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother Clara Edith Pheiffer and his son Jeffrey Mark Pheiffer.

Michael married Bonita Grace Peterson in 1966.
