The one name strikeout for Martin Gillett properly reflects cemetery records.

Curiously the manuscript notes for Removed or Removal means they were removed to the vault according to cemetery personnel. This does not sound correct and bears further research. (photo by BZS August 26, 2010).

Stampless cover with enclosed letter to Dr. Chester Hayden from his nephew, Horace William Hayden, son of Horace Henry Hayden. The cover is addressed to Dr. Chester Hayden, Penna. Avenue, Washington, D.C. and has a circular date stamp (CDS) for Baltimore, January 23, 1844, just 3 days before Horace Henry Hayden's death. A further note asks "Please Deliver Immediately."

Dear Uncle,

Father is still alive but his strength is fast leaving him He had a return of fever last night & it occasionally comes & goes. He has no lucid interval, or if any, but for a moment. He immediately held his hand out to me this morning when I entered the room & pressed it, but said nothing. He calls for us by name, but when we come & ask if he wants us, he says, "no, not specially." We try to get him into telling anything he may wish to say for any of his friends but in vain. His tongue is coated with thick white mucous extending down his throat which he will not let us remove to any extent & it greatly impedes his utterance. ---

It is painful for him to speak & almost impossible to understand him. He called a few minutes since for his watch which I handed him He then beckoned Ma to him & tried to put the guard round her neck but could not. She put it over her head & then he placed the watch in her hand and was quiet & appeared satisfied. This was an act of reason, as he evidently wished to give it to her. He will not take nourishment at all, it is impossible to induce him to ---

His pastor called today & he told him he was very much gratified to see him. He could not say much to him, but while praying his minister concluded with the Lord's Prayer and Pa repeated it after him. His pastor expressed himself in very encouraging terms as regards his preparation for death for which I am very thankful.
