He grew up in Christian County and eventually joined the U. S. Army. By 1920 he was stationed in Fort Worden Army Post, Jefferson County, Washington and had reached the rank of Sergeant.
After returning to Illinois, he married Ruth and had one son, Clarence James Litton, Junior, in 1927 in Springfield, Sangamon, Illinois.
