Burial of Mrs. Austin
Laid to Rest in the Cemetery at Churchtown
In the old Churchtown burial ground, whose hallowed earth is the resting place of so many beloved sons and daughters of Columbia county, there was buried yesterday Mrs. Josephine Decker Austin, who died in Hartford, Conn., on Saturday, the 24th Inst., at the residence of her son-in-law, William T. Tobey. Mrs. Austin, who was well known in our city, was a native of Livingston, this county, where she was born April 7, 1840, her ancestors being the well known families of Laphams and Deckers. She was the wife of the late John W. Austin, long a resident of Hudson, where he was known and respected as one of our stalwart citizens. Mrs. Austin was one of eleven children, the only surviving member of the family being Mrs. Stephen Austin, who is still a resident of Hudson, the two sisters having married brothers. It is the voice of all who knew the departed sister that if she had one trait of character woven into her life like a thread into a fabric it was to serve and add to the pleasure and happiness of others, even to the neglect of herself. The survivors of the deceased are: Walter D. Austin, Waterbury, Conn.; Mrs. William H. Tobey, Hartford, Conn.; Mrs. Charles C. Alcott, upper Troy, N.Y.; and four grandchildren, Arthur D. Alcott, McMinnville, Tenn.; Mrs. Walter Groesbeck, upper Troy, and Miss Helen Alcott of the same place, and Miss Daisy Field Tobey, of Hartford.
