Sherman Eber Card, born 28 Feb 1843 Charlotte Eaton County Mi. Resided there with parents until about 1857, then moving with family to Goodhue County Minnesota (Town of Leon, near Cannon Falls / Belle Creek, Mn.) after his father acquired a patent land grant to 40 acres located at the SW 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of T111N, R17W, Section 8. At age 19, he joined the "Goodhue County Rangers" serving from 24 Aug 1862 until 22 Sept 1862. In February of 1864, at Fort Snelling Mn., he enlisted and served as a private in Company "D" of Hatch's Minnesota Calvary Battalion. He was at Fort Abercrombie in 1864/5, mustered out May 1866. Returning home after service he married Emma Amy Drake on 25 Dec 1867. Sherman's mother Eliza passed away there in 1873. In 1876, they moved to the Village of Beaver in Whitewater Township, Winona County Mn. purchasing the "Valley House Hotel" and about 360 acres of land located in T108N R10W Sections 14 and 15. Sherman's father Eber accompanied at some time passing away there 31 March 1888. Sherman was awarded a Civil War Pension in 1890. He passed away 25 Nov 1917 at St. Paul, Ramsey County, Mn. Sherman Card's property stayed in the family until sold to the state of Minnesota in 1932 then becoming a part of the Whitewater Wildlife Management Area.
