This was my paternal gr.father and he said he was born in Virginia or North Carolina, maybe Galax, VA, he didn't know for sure. He also wasn't sure of the year he was born but all info. I've found indicates he was born in 1896. I know for sure he wasn't born as early as 1889 which is on his gravemarker.
I found him and his Mother Lizzie on the 1900 Carroll Co. VA census living with a family as servants, they were under the name of Lamkin. His mother Lizzie was age 21 and gr.pa was age 4. This wasn't far from Lizzie's father and stepmother and their kids in Pipers Gap.
Gr.pa was brought to Tipton Co. TN in later 1900 by his mother Lizzie along with his baby sister Mattie Hill. Gr.pa said his baby sister Mattie died as a baby and it's in the Craig family Bible that Mattie died on Dec. 31, 1900. His mother Lizzie married her first cousin Edward Craig in 1902 in Tipton Co. TN.
Gr.pa said he didn't remember where Mattie was buried but he figured she was probably buried in the Old Randolph Cem. and he said there are many buried there with no grave markers.
Gr.pa and gr.ma lived most of their married lives in old shacky looking houses in Tipton Co. doing share cropping while having kids and raising them, they were always dirt poor.
After their kids were all grown and gr.pa couldn't work in the fields anymore and after my mother started working gr.pa and gr.ma came to live with us for a while. She cooked, cleaned and kept us kids and gr.pa had a popcorn stand in the Hollywood area of Memphis outside a barber shop where he used to make and sell popcorn.
Uncle Othel built a brick house for his family in rural Atoka and they found an old school bus that they renovated and parked behind Uncle Othel's house. Gr.pa and gr.ma moved into it and lived there together until she died then he he lived there for over 10 yrs. by himself. He used to come to Memphis and spend a few days with some of the family doing foot peddling in Memphis selling combs, brushes, etc. that he bought wholesale to supplement the little bit of Social Security he was getting. He didn't have a car of his own so he would ride the bus or walk wherever he went and he was in great shape.
He probably would have lived a lot longer but he smoked for many yrs. and was often getting walking pneumonia. It got so bad he was put into the hospital and they found he had lung cancer. So he died within a couple of wks. after entering the hospital. He has been missed by all of us a lot these many yrs. after his death.
He must have been a really good Dad for I know that all of his children loved him very much. He wasn't a perfect man, he made his mistakes as we all do, but he was a good man. I love you gr.pa and have missed you so much, your gr.daughter, Kay.
