William J. Barron, 77, of Church Street died Thursday at Dixfield Health Care Center. He was born in Cohasset, Mass., a son of William H. and Katherine Valine Barron. He was a graduate of Madison High School and received a bachelor of arts degree from Farmington State Normal School. He also received a master's degree in education from the University of Maine.
On June 22, 1942, he married Avis Hall in Winthrop.
From 1942 to 1947, Mr. Barron served in the Army infantry including the European Theater in World War II. He saw action in the North African Campaign and at Monte Cassino.
After the war, he served in the Army Reserve and retired as a major.
He taught school at Fayette for a short period of time. He was a Northwest Mutual Life Insurance salesman from 1947 to 1980.
He was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church and a past president of Livermore Falls Rotary Club. He was a former member of Livermore Falls Planning Board, Livermore Falls School Board, St. Rose of Lima Church Council and the Knights of Columbus Council.
A son, William H., died Jan. 30.
Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, Edward W. of Lisbon; a daughter, Mrs. Veldessor (Barbara) Bradeen of Carthage; three brothers, John of Salt Lake City, Matthew of Browns Mills, N.J., and Robert of Camden; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. (Portland Press Herald (4/29/1995)
