SHREVEPORT, LA - A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church for Dorothy Ford Disosway of Shreveport on Wednesday, September 1, 2010. The 11 a.m. service will be officiated by The Rev. Pen Peery and the Rev. Bryan McDowell and will follow a private family interment at Forest Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Disosway died Friday, August 27, 2010, following a brief illness. She was born in Shreveport on August 10, 1914 to Amanda Taylor and Frank Henslee Ford. She was a graduate of C. E. Byrd High School. She attended Stephens College in Columbia, MO and was a graduate of the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi at OU.
On May 1, 1937 she married Lt. Gabriel P. Disosway, a West Point graduate who was a pilot stationed at Barksdale Field. During his career, which spanned 35 years, the Disosways lived and traveled all over the world. Early in her husband's career, Mrs. Disosway took an active part in the Officers' Wives' Clubs in elected positions, but later after General Disosway was a commander, she served as an Honorary President and Advisor to the Wives' clubs at all the bases in USAFE and TAC. Following WWII, the Disosways were stationed in Washington, D.C. and she served on the Committee for the Reburial of the Soldiers killed in the war. Mrs. Disosway was instrumental in the establishment of the CHAPS program (Children Have a Potential). This program provides services for special needs children of military personnel on a world-wide basis thus enabling the parents of these children equal career opportunity.
Mrs. Disosway continued to value and take part in volunteer activities all of her life and after her return to Shreveport she was a docent at the Spring Street Museum and worked at The Glen Gift Shop to mention a few. She never hesitated to help someone if she might do so, with a letter, with a phone call or by the sharing of information. She used her life experiences to full advantage and generously shared them. She also enjoyed golf and bridge and travel and maintaining a correspondence with her friends around the country.
She was a member of The First Presbyterian Church, The Junior League, Pi Beta Phi, The Colonial Dames, the Shreveport Country Club, the Shreveport Club, Pierremont Tennis Club and Barksdale Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 63 years, her brother, William F. Ford and his wife, Susan, and their daughter, Susan Garner, and her sister-in-law, Mrs. Ruth D. Allen.
She is survived by her daughter, Judith D. Malone and husband, Jerry of Shreveport, her son, John F. Disosway of Atlanta, GA and her daughter-in-law, Linda M. Disosway of Greensboro, GA, and her brother, Frank H. Ford, Jr. and his wife, Sue of Shreveport. Also by six grandchildren, Dr. W. Ricks Hanna and wife, Robin of Memphis, TN, Brett T. Hanna of Raleigh, N.C., Deborah H. Shirley and husband, Keenan of Garner, N.C., Allison D. McKnight and husband, Scott of Ft. Worth, TX, Jill M. Disosway of Atlanta, GA and Taylor D. Atwood and husband, John of Atlanta, GA. Her nine great-grandchildren are, Madison and Will Hanna, Molly Margaret and Gabe Hanna, Carson Shirley and Drew, Will and Catherine and Claire McKnight. And, a number of nieces and nephews.

She and her husband were reburied in Arlington National Cemetery in April 2016. A few months later they were disinterred again and removed to the cemetery at the Air Force Academy in Colorado.
