Obituary--The Topeka Capital-Journal

EMMETT--Rachel E. Sumner, 90, Emmett, died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at an Onaga hospital.
She was born Aug. 2, 1910, in Seneca, the daughter of August Bernard and Blanche Becker Haug. She attended the Longbranch Rural School and lived most of her life in Emmett.
Mrs. Sumner was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and the Altar Sodality at the church. She was a charter member of Happy Homemakers and a member of the Jolly Workers, both at Emmett. She was a former 4-H leader and a former member of the St. Mary's Literary Club.
She married Morgan L. Sumner on Sept. 22, 1931, in Emmett. He died Feb. 24, 1990.
Survivors include two daughters, Maxine E. LoScalzo, Yukon, Okla. and Sharon Legg, Leavenworth; three sisters: Mildred Philipp, Arizona, Lucille Jones, Colorado Springs, Colo. and Beatrice Kauffmann, Canon City, Colo.; three brothers: Art Haug, Lawrence; Regis Haug, North Kansas City, Mo.; and Bob Haug, Bonita Springs, Fla; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a. m. Saturday at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Emmett. Burial will be at St. Clere Cemetery north of Emmett. Mrs. Sumner will lie in state after 2 p. m. Friday at Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home in St. Marys where a prayer service at 7:30 p. m. will be followed by a rosary.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Golden Acres Nursing Home and sent in care of the funeral home.
