James H. Crandall was the son of Thomas Batson and Elizabeth Ann (Gray) Crandall. Middle initial "H." might stand for Harrison, a name used elsewhere in the Crandall family, but that is not proven. He married Eliza Jane Marsh about 1860 and is listed with her in the 1860 US Census for Franklin Twp., Monroe Co., OH. With them is Catharine Marsh, sister of Eliza Jane. James and Elliza Crandall had only one confirmed child, Mary Elizabeth Crandall, born 25 June 1863. After James' death, Eliza Jane remarried, about 1866, to Thompson P. Wilson.

Inscription is not completely readable. From other sources, we know his birthdate is 26 Jun 1837 and probate started 17 Aug 1864. "Born June", "Died Aug 14" and "Aged 27" can be seen.
