Evelyn L. Thompson, 98, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010, at her home in Grand Island. Evelyn was born on Aug. 1, 1912, in Grand Island to William F. and Emma (Conow) Krehmke.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard L. Thompson.

She grew up in Grand Island graduating from Grand Island Senior High School with the class of 1929. She then attended the Grand Island Baptist College. She was united in marriage to Bernard L. Thompson on May 28, 1933, in Grand Island, where the couple made their home. In 1935, she and her husband opened a wholesale business, The Thompson Company, which began as a candy and tobacco business. Mrs. Thompson helped her husband in the operation of the firm, which grew into a large operation with offices in Grand Island, Hastings, Kearney and O'Neill. It expanded to include paper goods, groceries and many other items. The Thompson Company was one of the 21 founding members of the Nugget Brand of nationwide food distributors in 1966. In 1976 the firm was sold. She enjoyed retirement at their acreage home where they were involved in breeding and showing Appaloosa horses. Mr. Thompson preceded her in death in 1996.

Evelyn was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church. Their charitable interests were directed to the youth of the community. Among their gifts was the Thompson 4-H Arena at Fonner Park, which is used for the State Finals of 4-H, also, the Thompson Trading Post at Camp Augustine and the Hoof Stock Barn at the former Heritage Zoo.

Survivors include dear friends, Richard "Dick" and J.P. Larson of Grand Island; a brother-in-law, R. Blaine Thompson of Grand Island; one niece and several nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, and a brother and sister in law, William and Mary Jo Kremke.
