Merton served five years in the Army Air Force during World War II and was later a member of the Strategic Air Command Reserve. He married Catherine Norah Whalen on Sept 21, 1947 at St. James Church in Gouverneur. She was one of the first north country women to serve in the Women's Army Corps and she died in March 1949 at the age of 29. He later married Christena Bishop of Heuvelton in 1953, but the marriage ended in separation. Merton was a self-employed sign painter.
