Service of the 8th Iowa Infantry included the battle of Shiloh. The unit fought 10 hours on the first day repelling attack after attack. It was the last to leave the advanced line. This gave Buell time to reinforce the rear lines. The 8th, entirely cut off, fought until they could fight no longer, threw down their arms only to see many of their number shot down after they had surrendered. A few of the 8th who escaped capture were placed in a consolidated regiment and took part in the Tennessee and Mississippi campaigns. The unit was reorganized in 1863 at St Louis participating in battle of Jackson, the suicidal assault of Ft Beauregard at Vicksburg and the siege that followed. They participated in the Meridian Raid. After return to Memphis for provost duty , Aug 21 1864, the 8th with the assistance of the 37th Iowa (The Greybeard Regiment where all the men were older than the age of 45) repulsed a surprise attack by the troops of the notorious Forrest. The unit was moved in 1865 to New Orleans, proceeded to Mobile Bay and took part in assault of Spanish Fort capturing several hundred prisoners.
