Edward Wesley Hale was born on January 16, 1887 in Denison, Grayson County, Texas. He was the son of John Henry Hale (Dec. 1862 - ), who was born in Texas, and Maggie E. Strayhorn Hale (Nov. 1865 - ), who was born in Mississippi. John Henry and Maggie were married on Nov. 1, 1884 in Ellis, Texas.

In 1900, the family was living in Doyal, St. Clair, Missouri. Edward Wesley, who was known as E.W., was 13 years old.

E. W. had three siblings — James Hale (1889 -), Samuel O. Hale ( Aug. 1893) and Unknown Male (April 1900 -), who was one month old when the 1900 census was taken.

In 1910, Edward married Sadie Dolly Brown in Salina, Kansas. The couple had one son, Walter Wesley Hale (1913 -1888). Sadie divorced Edward in 1915.

In 1916, Edward Wesley Hale was living in Stoutland, Camden County, Missouri when he met Bettie DeCoursey Hamilton, a local resident. On August 22, 1916, Bettie and E.W. were married in Lebanon, Laclede County, Missouri.

In 1920, the family lived in Auglaize, Camden County, Missouri. In the 1930 census, they were shown residing in Ward, Yell, Arkansas, where they lived the rest of their lives. In 1940, E.W.’s father, John Henry Hale, a widower, was living with E.W. and Bettie.

E.W., a farmer and laborer, and Bettie had five children — Frank Chester Hale (1917-1982), Lucile Hale (1921 - ), Edward J. Hale (1923- ), Velma Hale (1925 - ) and Kinward Ace Hale (1930-2001). The couple also raised William David Hamilton, Bettie’s son from her 21-month marriage to David Hamilton, who died on May 31, 1916, when William David was only one year old.

E.W. died on Feb. 23, 1947 in Yell County, Arkansas, aged 60. Bettie DeCoursey Hale continued to live in Ward, Yell County, Arkansas, where she died on May 21, 1963, aged 68. They are both buried in the Ola Sandlin Cemetery, Ola, Yell County, Arkansas. Bettie’s headstone inscription is "Bettie" w/o E.W.
