Steinway was a member of the Steinway Piano family. The Steinway's built a factory in 1903 on Long Island, New York. The factory was designed by Frederick.

Frederick received his childhood education in Berlin, Germany. His family built the Steinway Hall building in New York which opened in 1866 and they had their showrooms near Carnegie Hall. Years later, Frederick served as President of Steinway & Sons up to the time of his death.

The family had built Steinway halls in New York, Hamburg, London, Chicago, Vienna, Munich and more recently Beijing and Seoul.
