Albert A. McLean, D.D.S., retired dentist, died Monday morning at home after a brief illness. He was 94. He was predeceased in death by his wife of 47 years, Harriet Pond McLean, and then by his friend and companion of 10 years, Marijane Kitchen. He leaves five children: Robert A. McLean (and wife Sydney McLean) of Germantown, TN; Michael S. McLean (and wife Pat McLean) of Virginia Beach, VA; Albert G. McLean and wife Ann McLean) of Memphis, TN; Harriet S. McLean (and husband Samuel Blackwell, Jr.) of Germantown, TN; and Newton P. McLean; fifteen grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Albert was born in Bells, TN, to Isaac Newton McLean and Nina Spellings McLean. The family moved to Milan, TN where he graduated from Milan High School during the depression. His father, a banker, recommended him for a job in the Land Bank (of Louisville, KY) where he came to the attention of Roger Branigin (attorney and later governor of the state of Indiana) who encouraged him to go to college and was responsible for his enrolling in Franklin College in Franklin, Indiana. Upon graduation from Franklin he entered the University of Tennessee Dental School in Memphis where he met his wife Harriet Pond McLean, who was pursuing a master's degree at the university at the time. When the United States entered World War II, the U. S. Army took over the dental school, and upon graduation Albert was commissioned an officer in the U. S. Army Air Corps in which he served as a dentist in the Dental Corps until the end of the war. He was discharged honorably with the rank of Captain and served for some years in the reserves. He practiced dentistry actively in Memphis in private practice for forty years; he was a member of the Memphis and Tennessee dental societies. He was a member of Evergreen Presbyterian Church where he and Harriet were married in 1941. For over sixty years he served Evergreen faithfully as deacon, then elder and trustee. A supporter of Southwestern at Memphis, now Rhodes College, he was a member of the President's Counsel, serving under Dr. Rhodes. He loved to travel, and he loved the outdoors. At age 75 he hiked the arduous Milford Trek in New Zealand (a five day hike) accompanied by his son and daughter. He was an avid bird (quail) hunter and golfer. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, September 4, at Evergreen Presbyterian Church with visitation at Evergreen from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, September 3. Memorials can be sent to Evergreen Presbyterian Church, Rhodes College, Franklin College, or other charity of the donor's choice.
