Tilley was a wealthy man as wealth was estimated in that day. He was a Tanner by trade, a Salesman in 1711, a Constable and held other main offices. His name is mentioned no lesss than twenty two (22) times in the town records. In 1719, in the distribution of pews in the First Church, he was awarded the best, eight feet square. In 1725, Tilley was a Garrison Soldier from July 26 to Nov. 18, at Brookfield, where he had to guard men from Indians, while making hay.
