George W Bennett was born on Oct 27, 1855, on a farm in Monroe township, one mile north of Gambier, Ohio where he has been content to spend his life. He is the son of John and Eliza (Conley) Bennett, the father a native of Jefferson county, while his mother was born in Ireland.She came to America when young in years. Grandfather, Thomas Bennett came with his family to Monroe township, Knox county, in 1828 when the country was practically a vast forest and neighbors were few. The father of the subject of this sketch also devoted his life to farming.
George was brought up on the home farm, where he remained until his marriage , October 3, 1882, to Sarah Louise Holmes, daughter of Josiah and Sarah (Wasson) Holmes. This union resulted in the birth of three daughters; Helen "Grace" born 16 Jan 1884- died Feb 1969 married J. Clyde Smith and lived in Pleasant township,Knox county;Sarah "Lena" born Dec 4,1885- died 29 Aug 1877 married Gordon Cunningham & lived in College Township, and Edna Malvina born 18 Sept 1892 - died 4 June 1959, married Charles Silliman Clark and lived in Monroe township.
for ten years after his marriage, Mr. Bennett lived on a farm about a mile east of where his parents lived. He moved in 1892 to a farm on the corner of what is now Route 308 and New Gambier Road in Monroe township. His farm consisted of 175 acres. Besides general farming he raised horses, hogs and sheep.
Politically he was a Republican. He served as Justice of the Peace, and a member of the school board. He and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal church in Gambier where he was a member of the board of stewards for 20 years.
