ASKEW - Harold Eugene, 79, of Ebensburg, passed away peacefully September 3, 2010 at Garvey Manor, Hollidaysburg. He was born August 25, 1931 in Colver, son of John William and Mabel Bessie (Spencer) Askew. Survived by wife, Victoria H. Askew whom he married December 29, 1963 and stepsons: Roderick McMahon of Willis, Texas; Vincent McMahon, of Greenwich, Connecticut; and faithful dog "Little Boy – Tip". Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews including: Barbara Askew Soper; J. William "Bill" Carlisle and John "Benny" Askew, all of Ebensburg; and sisters-in-law: Marge (Phil) Askew of Lake Placid, Florida; Lois (Milton) Askew of Portage and Maryland; Annabelle (Guy) Askew of New Alexandria; Lillian (John) Askew of Hastings; and cousin Ardath Morgan, of State College. Last surviving member of his immediate family, he was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother Mercedes Chute Askew, brothers: Clair, George, Guy, Milton, Phil, Bill and John; and sisters: Becky, Thelma, Cordelia, Mary and Mabel. Harold retired from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1969 after a 21 year career including service in Korea and Viet Nam. Upon retirement, he immediately entered the University of Miami receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in accounting in 1973. He served nine years as a U.S. Treasury Agent, then twelve years as Internal Auditor with the Broward County, Florida Sheriff's Office, from which he retired in 1994. During his years in Florida he served as Pembroke Pines City Commissioner and Vice Mayor, and various city and county boards. He was Area 6 leader of the Broward County Democratic Executive Committee and president of the Pembroke Pines Democratic Club. Member of the National and Florida Chapters of the National Association of Parliamentarians, the American Legion, DAV, VFW and LOOM. In October 1998, a few weeks shy of having been away for 50 years, Harold and his wife heeded the yearning to return to his childhood home of Ebensburg. He immediately went to Fire School and became a member of Dauntless Fire Company. He ran for and won a seat on Ebensburg Borough Council on which he served with distinction from 2000-2003, retiring when his health necessitated it. Harold was instrumental in coordinating talks for the construction of the Ebensburg Tennis Center. Friends will be received from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Askew-Houser Funeral Homes, Inc., 300 N. Julian Street, Ebensburg, PA 15931 where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, Pastor Jim Farrer and Mr. Jim Tomb, officiating. Interment at Lloyd Cemetery. Military graveside ritual by the Menoher Post VFW Ritual Team.
